PTE Academic — Frequently Asked Questions

PTE Academic is a fully computer-based English proficiency test by Pearson. It is accepted by 3,000+ universities worldwide and is approved for Australian PR (DHA), Australian student visas, Canadian student visas (SDS-equivalent pathways), UK Skilled Worker visas, and study programs in New Zealand, Ireland and many EU countries. Scores are reported on a 10–90 scale.

For students who already score around CEFR B2 (rough equivalent of IELTS 6.0–6.5), our standard PTE batch runs 4–6 weeks of structured live classes plus 2–3 weeks of focused mock-test practice. Students starting from a lower base (B1) typically need 8–10 weeks. We assess your starting level in a free counselling session before placing you in the right batch.

For most skilled migration pathways (subclasses 189 / 190 / 491), 65 is the “Competent English” threshold, 79 is “Superior English” (worth 20 points), and 50 is the bare minimum acceptable score. For Australian student visas at most universities, the threshold is between 50 and 64 depending on the course. Our 79+ target track is built specifically for PR aspirants.

It depends on individual strengths. PTE rewards clear pronunciation, fluency and speed in a computer-based environment, with no human examiner — which suits students who are anxious in face-to-face Speaking. IELTS rewards natural conversation and handwriting precision. In our 19 years of training, we have seen about 60% of Indian engineering and tech students score faster on PTE; arts and humanities students often perform equally on both.

PTE uses an automated scoring engine that evaluates content, form, pronunciation, oral fluency, grammar and spelling at task level. Many items are integrated — for example, a Read Aloud task feeds into both Reading and Speaking scores. That cross-scoring is why a single weak skill can drag down two section scores. Our methodology drills enabling skills (pronunciation, fluency, grammar) before chasing question types.

Every PTE batch at KS Institute includes a minimum of 6 full-length scored mocks under real test conditions in our computer lab. Each mock is followed by a 1-on-1 score review where we analyse weak enabling skills (oral fluency, pronunciation, written discourse) and adjust your study plan. Additional mock packs are available for students targeting 79+ aggressively.

We offer both. Offline batches run at our Hinjewadi Phase 3, Pune centre with on-site computer practice. Online batches are live (not pre-recorded) over Zoom / Google Meet with the same teacher-led structure, individual Speaking feedback, and access to digital mock tests. About 40% of our PTE students join online from outside Pune — Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Delhi NCR, Chandigarh, Kochi and Ahmedabad are the top cities.

Maximum 8–10 students per PTE batch. Speaking and Writing tasks need individual feedback, so we keep batches deliberately small. This is why we cap intake instead of running 25+ student “mass” PTE batches that are common at larger chain institutes.

Every student gets a documented score-improvement plan after their first official PTE attempt. If you fall short of the target band agreed at enrolment despite full attendance and mock-test completion, we offer a free retake-prep cycle covering revision classes plus additional mocks.
