The PTE Academic Reading section tests your ability to understand written English in academic contexts. With 32-40 minutes to complete 5 different question types, knowing the format and having targeted strategies is crucial for maximizing your score.

This guide breaks down each PTE Reading question type and provides proven strategies to help you score 79+.

PTE Reading Section Overview

Duration: 32-40 minutes
Question Types: 5
Skills Tested: Reading comprehension, vocabulary, grammar, skimming, scanning

The Reading section is integrated with the Writing section in PTE's scoring system, so your performance here affects both your Reading and Writing scores.

Question Type 1: Multiple Choice (Single Answer)

Format: Read a text (up to 300 words) and choose ONE correct answer from 3-5 options.
Time Allocation: 2 minutes per question
Scoring: 1 mark for correct answer, 0 for incorrect

Strategy

  1. Read the question first — Know what you're looking for before reading the passage
  2. Scan for keywords — Locate the relevant section quickly
  3. Eliminate wrong answers — Often 2-3 options can be eliminated immediately
  4. Look for paraphrasing — The correct answer rarely uses exact words from the text
  5. Don't overthink — If you've eliminated to 2 options and are stuck, make your best guess and move on

Common Trap: Answers that use exact phrases from the text but change the meaning slightly.

Question Type 2: Multiple Choice (Multiple Answers)

Format: Read a text and select ALL correct answers from 5-7 options.
Time Allocation: 2-3 minutes per question
Scoring: +1 for each correct answer, -1 for each incorrect selection

Strategy

  1. Read all options first — Get a sense of what topics the question covers
  2. Be conservative — Only select answers you're confident about (negative marking!)
  3. Check for "all of the above" logic — Sometimes multiple options say the same thing differently
  4. Look for absolute words — Options with "always," "never," "only" are often wrong
  5. Manage your score — If uncertain, it's better to select 2 correct answers than 3 answers with 1 wrong (2 points vs 1 point)

Common Trap: Selecting options that are true but not mentioned in the passage.

Question Type 3: Re-order Paragraphs

Format: 4-5 text boxes appear in random order. Drag them into the correct logical sequence.
Time Allocation: 2-3 minutes per question
Scoring: 1 mark for each correctly placed paragraph pair

Strategy

  1. Find the opening sentence — Look for:

    • Introduction of a new topic (no pronouns like "this," "these," "it")
    • General statements before specific examples
    • Context-setting sentences
  2. Identify linking words — Track connectors:

    • Time: "first," "then," "finally," "subsequently"
    • Contrast: "however," "on the other hand," "conversely"
    • Addition: "furthermore," "moreover," "additionally"
    • Cause-effect: "therefore," "consequently," "as a result"
  3. Follow pronouns — Match pronouns to their antecedents:

    • "This approach" → must follow a sentence describing an approach
    • "These findings" → must follow research results
    • "He/She/They" → must follow introduction of the person(s)
  4. Look for logical flow — Does the sequence make sense?

    • Problem → Solution
    • Cause → Effect
    • Question → Answer
    • General → Specific
  5. Practice mental mapping — Don't just drag randomly; visualize the logical structure first

Common Trap: Focusing on keywords alone without checking logical flow.

Question Type 4: Fill in the Blanks (Reading)

Format: A text with several blanks. Click each blank to see a dropdown with 4-5 word options.
Time Allocation: 2 minutes per question
Scoring: 1 mark for each correctly filled blank

Strategy

  1. Read the entire sentence first — Context is crucial for choosing the right word

  2. Identify word type needed — Is it a noun, verb, adjective, adverb?

  3. Check grammar — Does the word fit grammatically?

    • Verb tense consistency
    • Singular/plural agreement
    • Preposition compatibility
  4. Test collocations — Some words naturally go together:

    • "make a decision" (not "do a decision")
    • "highly unlikely" (not "strongly unlikely")
    • "mitigate risks" (not "reduce risks" in formal contexts)
  5. Consider meaning — Does the word make sense in context?

  6. Don't spend too long — If stuck between 2 options, make your best guess and flag for review if time permits

Common Trap: Choosing words that sound similar but have different meanings (e.g., "affect" vs "effect").

Question Type 5: Fill in the Blanks (Reading & Writing)

Format: A text with several blanks. Drag words from a box below to fill the blanks correctly.
Time Allocation: 2-3 minutes per question
Scoring: 1 mark for each correctly filled blank

Strategy

  1. Read the full text first — Get the overall context

  2. Count blanks vs words — Usually more words than blanks (distractors)

  3. Fill the easiest blanks first — Build confidence and narrow down remaining options

  4. Use grammar clues:

    • Articles "a/an" → singular countable noun follows
    • Prepositions → certain verbs/nouns require specific prepositions
    • Tense markers → "has" requires past participle
  5. Check word type — Ensure you're placing the right part of speech

  6. Look for collocations — Which word pairs naturally with others in the sentence?

  7. Process of elimination — As you fill blanks, remaining words become easier to place

Common Trap: Not checking if all words have been used or if words are left over (check your logic!).

Time Management Strategy

The Reading section doesn't show individual question timers, so you need to pace yourself:

  • Total time: 32-40 minutes
  • Approximate breakdown:
    • Multiple Choice (Single): 2 min each
    • Multiple Choice (Multiple): 2.5 min each
    • Re-order Paragraphs: 2.5 min each
    • Fill in the Blanks (Reading): 2 min each
    • Fill in the Blanks (R&W): 2.5 min each

General Rules:

  • Don't spend more than 3 minutes on any single question
  • If you're stuck, make your best guess and move on
  • Flag difficult questions mentally but DON'T plan to return (you usually won't have time)
  • The last 5 minutes are critical — don't let one question eat up time for 3 remaining questions

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Reading too slowly — PTE Reading requires speed AND accuracy
  2. Ignoring the question — Reading the passage without knowing what to look for
  3. Selecting answers with exact text matches — PTE tests paraphrasing comprehension
  4. Spending too long on one question — Every question is worth the same marks
  5. Not practicing with timer — You need to build speed through timed practice
  6. Ignoring grammar in Fill in the Blanks — Meaning isn't enough; grammar must be correct too
  7. Random guessing on Multiple Choice (Multiple Answers) — Negative marking makes this costly

Practice Tips

Build Reading Speed

  • Practice skimming for main ideas (1 minute per passage)
  • Practice scanning for specific information (30 seconds to locate)
  • Read academic articles daily (science, technology, history, social issues)

Improve Vocabulary

  • Learn academic word lists (AWL - Academic Word List)
  • Study collocations and phrasal verbs
  • Use context to guess unknown words during practice

Master Each Question Type

  • Don't just practice randomly — focus on one question type until you master it
  • Analyze your mistakes: Why did you choose the wrong answer?
  • Time yourself on individual question types first, then move to full section practice

Simulate Test Conditions

  • Practice full Reading sections under timed conditions
  • Use official PTE practice tests or high-quality mock tests
  • Review your performance: Which question types are your weaknesses?

Scoring Tips for 79+

To score 79+ in PTE Reading, you typically need:

  • 90%+ accuracy on Fill in the Blanks (both types)
  • Strong performance on Re-order Paragraphs (these are worth multiple points)
  • Avoid negative marking on Multiple Choice (Multiple Answers)
  • Speed without sacrificing accuracy — finish all questions

Focus Areas:

  1. Grammar mastery — Essential for Fill in the Blanks
  2. Vocabulary breadth — Academic words and collocations
  3. Logical thinking — Critical for Re-order Paragraphs
  4. Paraphrasing recognition — PTE rarely repeats exact wording
